JUNE IS HERE
Hello everyone, June is over already and it was exciting for us at YALI Network Kwara, we can't wait to share our June events with you all.
The hub engaged in quite a number of activities in the month of June, from commemorating the World blood donor day to world sickle cell day, the international day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking, The masterclass session and the June members' hangout.


WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY:
YALI Network Kwara commemorated the World Enviroment day in partnership with the PICK THAT TRASH Team. The day which was marked on the 5th of June with the theme "RESTORING OUR ECOSYSTEM THROUGH CLEANUP AND COMMUNITY SENSITIZATION" had lots of volunteers and market women in attendance.
Mega Clean Up, Waste Management/Disposal Sensitisation, Demonstration of 'how to use' Roll-On Roll-Off (RORO) Bins and a lot of Environmental Games amongst others were used to commemorate the day.
The team moved from Oja Oba to General, educating and sensitizing people on proper waste disposal methods.
Nose masks and hand gloves were also given to volunteers as they picked and cleaned up the streets.

WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY:
In the spirit of caring for humanity, Yali network Kwara partnered with the Red Cross Society of Nigeria, Kwara State Chapter, on the 14th of June 2021, to Commemorate The event, held at the General, hospital Taiwo Oke, Ilorin also had in attendance, Representatives from the National youth council of Nigeria, And members of the Red cross society of Nigeria, Kwara State chapter.
According to the CMD, General Hospital, There arelots of instances whereby blood become the only factor that determines whether a person lives or die. Such situation include postnatal period, accident, surgery or treatment of some ailments, when blood transfusion becomes inevitable and the reality is there's never enough blood to meet the demands for blood transfusion in our hospitals.
5 YALI Kwara members were certified fit to donate blood out of our voluntary donors.
The World Blood Donor Day is a day set apart by the United Nations to create awareness about the importance of blood donation and also celebrate blood donors who are helping save others, Blood saves lives, therefore, the blood donors, especially voluntary ones (who donate without payment) deserve kudos.


MASTERCLASS:
Our monthly Masterclass session for the month of June came up on the 7th of June, 2021 with Mr Patrick Ifeanyi.
Mr. Patrick Chukwu Ifeanyi,member, YALI Network Kwara, Astudent of the university of Ilorin and Currently the president of the department of mathematics. He is also very passionate about leadership, education and tech.
The Session which took place on Telegram centers on "NAVIGATING AND MAXIMIZING THE TELEGRAM PLATFORM"
It is common knowledge that a lot of people do not find navigating the telegram Platform easy, to many it seems like a complicated application, which is why many people dreaded having to use it.
This session with Mr. Patrick enlightened members on the exciting features embedded in the Telegram Platform that makes it easy to use.
He enlightened members on the navigation of the Telegram platform and highlighted cool features about the app that gives it an edge over several other messaging apps like WhatsApp.
Also shared in the class are simple tricks that can be pulled with the app to aid proper navigation.
The features, properly explained with examples c navigation includes;
Using the chat folders to save important messages
Adding nearby people and group to your list.
Editing sent messages to correct.
Scheduling Messages to be posted at a later time.
Deleting Sent Messages on a group.
The very enlightening session was concluded with a question and answer session.

WORLD SICKLE CELL DAY:
World Sickle Cell Day is a United Nation's recognised day to raise awareness of sickle cell at a national and international level. On 22nd December 2008, the United Nations General assembly adopted a resolution that recognises sickle cell disease as a public health problem and "one of the world's foremost genetic diseases."
The resolution calls for members to raise awareness of sickle cell on June 19th of each year at national and international level.
YALI Network Kwara in partnership with Pearls sickle cell Initiatives commemorated the World Sickle Cell day wi 12 a walk to create awareness and sensitize the general public about Sickle Cell and its prevention. As a result of this ignorance,a lot of issues have arisen in families, which has led to loss of lives (amongst others).
Applying one-on-one approach, all participants were enjoined to talk to at least one person on the street during this campaign.
This Campaign also featured a free genotype tes for interested individuals. This is mainly to help people know their Genotype to have a safer marital experience and reduce the menace of Sickle Cell in our society.
Research has revealed that in Africa, Nigeria has the highest number of sickle cell patients. To battle this problem and change the narrative, all hands needs to be on deck.

JUNE HANGOUT:
To celebrate the midyear in a more relaxed way and atmosphere, The Executives organised an hangout for members.
The mid year's hangout which The mid year's hangout held on the 19th of June, 2021 at the the Unilorin Dam was tagged "JUNE POTLUCK HANGOUT" and it was one members won't forget in a hurry.
The event was put together to allow members come together, interact, network, learn, play games and just unwind.
It was not just all games and fun, we also had an interactive session facilitated by Mr Olasupo Abideen.
He engaged the members on the topic: "LEADERSHIP AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP: BALANCING THE ROLES".
Mr. Abideen spoke extensively on various ways to balance the roles between being an effective leader and a thriving entrepreneur and how that balance is especially important in this part of the world to attain success.
Being a global leader and a thriving entrepreneur himself, Mr Olasupo connected with the members using his own entrepreneurial journey as a case study and his experiences being a leader also came in handy on the leadership aspect.
The session ended with a question and answer session which further educated members on Leadership and Entrepreneurship.
 After the session came the game and fun part where members get to interact, learn and played games.
Members also rendered inspiring spoken words, poetry and games like charade, chess, Scrabble and monopoly were also played.
It was indeed a fun filled evening for our members who attended the hangout as they also went home with "wise sayings" adapted from the spoken words rendered during the hangout which includes:
"If it's not making money, it's not making sense", "lam a king of myself first", "A lady wants to BE IN CHARGE" and finally,
"Don't sit if you ain't invited to, E get why" and it was fun all through.
To wrap up the hangout, the State Coordinator, Omolara Alabi also engaged the members with words of thanks and appreciation, she also reiterated the Network's availability to work with members who are willing to partner with the hub and also enjoined members to support the state hub by paying their member's dues, to make running the network easier for the Executives.
The hangout which had almost 70 members in attendance was also supported by Item 7 eatery who gave the hub 55 packs of food for our members because the hangout could have missed why it was called a POTLUCK without so many refreshments for all members available.
Some members also came with refreshments like drinks, sweets, biscuits and more to share with others in the spirit of sharing.

DRUG ABUSE DAY:
The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is commemorated on the 26th of June every year.
This is to call the attention of the public to the effect of drug abuse.
YALI Network Kwara had an online campaign to comemorate the day, with the theme "SHARE DRUG FACTS, SAVE LIVES". With flyers depicting drug abuse facts,causes, treatment, types of drugs and their effects on the users.
Abuse of drugs has several implications, one of them, and the most popular, is that it leads to mental.

In a publication by Yomi Kazeem, Ohe stated that over the past year alone, nearly 15% of the adult population in Nigeria (around 14.3 million people) reported a "considerable level" of use of psychoactive drug substances-it's a rate much higher than the 2016 global average of 5.6% among adults and the highest levels of drug use was recorded among people aged between 25 to 39, with cannabis being the most widely used drug.

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH:
Taofeeq Idowu Abdulkareem, fondly called "Obama Jr. II" is from Owo, Ondo state.
Taofeek started his Primary Education in Akure, Ondo State, Had his secondary education between the year 2012 to 2018, After which he secured admission into the prestigiousUniversity of Ilorin, Kwara State. He is currently a second year student of History and International Studies at UNILORIN. His interests lies in acts of humanitarianism, Advocacy and Activism, Politics, Networking.
He is also a passionate volunteer who loves giving back to the society. Some of the organizations he volunteers at includes: YALI Network Kwara and Wikipedia. According to him, his love for activism stemmed out of his passion for law. As a passionate changemaker, he volunteers in different capacities, He is a Member of the YALI Network Kwara social media team, Member YALI Network Kwara Secretary's team where he works with other volunteers to post our daily quotes. He is also an Executive member, Wikimedia Fans Club, UNILORIN, As well as Member, UNILORIN Student Union Vice President's Committee. He also got an award as the number 1 Editor for Wiki LovesSDGs NG.
Taofeek is motivated by Growth and success and his favourite quote is one by Maya Angelou which says "You will face many defeats in life, but never let yourself be defeated".
Like every youth who looks up to someone in the journey of life, Taofeek's role model is Barack Hussain Obama which made him adopt the nickname "Obama Jr. II", Impressive.
To round it up, His whole life apart from academics revolves around volunteering and advocating. "I thank God for who I am and who I am becoming".

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH:
Adejumo Barakat is an educator and has been in the teaching line for the past 5 years.
She's passionate about quality education, A conserved environment, peace, leadership, and poverty eradication. She's the co-founder of PeaceBoxNigeria and a serial volunteer.
Adejumo Barakat is a Native of Ibadan, Oyo state. She's a graduate of Federal College of Education Special, Oyo, Oyo State, where she studied Business Education and Special Education for students with learning disabilities.
She's a final year student of University of Ilorin, studying Business Education. She's an educator, graphics designer, content creator, Public Speaker, relationship and life coach, businesswoman,
An Ambassador of Literacy for African child (Laced Africa) also An Ambassador of Initiative for Sound Education, Relationships, and Health (ISERH). She's a trained change agent, a certified SDGs Ambassador by Mogi Global Leadership school.
She's also an Alumnus of MOGI Global Leadership where she won The Face of Cohort Award, Outstanding Speaker Award, Best Book Project Award, Best Video Project Award, and Captain Leadership Honour for Nigeria.
She's a volunteer for Young Africa Leaders Initiative (YALI) Kwara network as a member of the welfare team where she works with other volunteers on celebrating members' birthdays and sending of monthly checkup messages, and these are tasks she is executing dilligently alongside her team members.
She's also a certified beneficiary of Jobberman Soft skills training and an ambassador for World Literacy Foundation 2021 Fellowship.
Barakat's Favourite Quote goes thus "there's ability in disability, impossibility connotes I am possible". Her parents are her mentors and they're her motivation to do more.
We celebrate her commitment and dedication to volunteerism and her passion towards contributing her quota to the development of others.

MEMBER’S SPOTLIGHT:
Mobolaji Taofeeqoh is currently a 500 level student of Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries at the prestigious University of Ilorin.
Taofeeqoh is passionate about volunteering, self development, environment, good governance and humanity.
She is the co-founder of Achievers Foundation for Humanity and currently the Vice President of Junior Chambers International Nigeria, University of Ilorin.
She is also interested in good governance and politics, as she believes, inclusion of quality youth into politics is one of the way forward to solving Nigeria's problems.
Following her love for politics, She is currently serving as a Senator representing her faculty at the Students' Union of her school. Mobolaji Taofeeqoh is an indigene of Ilorin, Kwara State. A serial volunteer and an active YALI Network Kwara Member. She volunteers for many organizations like JCI, YALI, 6th Goal Africa amongst others.
She loves travelling and reading quality books. Her Favorite Quote is one by Mae West that says "You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough".
We celebrate Taofeeqoh's dedication as a YALI Network Kwara member.

MEMBER’S SPOTLIGHT:
IBRAHIM, Mustapha Olamilekan hails from Pakata, Ilorin West Local 
Government of Kwara State.
As ayoung man who grew up in a neighborhood where the struggle was like 'survival of the fittest', He learned at a very early age to stand for himself and the vulnerable ones, make his voice heard, and never let his courage down against all odds.
He started his education at Ansaru Deen Primary School, Owo, Ondo State where he served as the 2007/2008 School Imam. He proceeded to Imade College Owo where he obtained his Senior School Certificate in 2014. He was also the school Imam at Imade College.
Olamilekan is currently a 500L student of the Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria
He is a serial volunteer, a lover of community development, and a streetchild advocate.
Olamilekan has volunteered for different organizations such as KwaraBuild, Girls2Women Initiatives, You & I Foundation for Humanity and YESBIT.
His interests revolves around making an impact and giving back to the community. Olamilekan is an ardent lover of technology and currently leverages ICT management to run a virtual cafe.
Aside from being an entrepreneur and serial volunteer, He is also a member of many organizations where he served in various capacities:
He served as the Director of Training, Junior Chamber International, UNILORIN Chapter.
Chairman, Ilorin Emirates Students' Union Independent Electoral Commission for the 2020/2021 session.
Member, YALI Network Kwara Communication Committee.

His mentor is Abdulhakeem Abdulkareem and finally in his words, "My greatest motivation is service to humanity. I believe that a candle lost nothing lighting another. My inspiration is drawn from my favorite quote, the last line of the JCI Creed, which states that 'Service to Humanity is the best work of life".
