On Restructuring

In the last few years, structuring has been a front burner in every political, social and economic discussion in Nigeria. An average Nigerian, both literate and illiterate, favours restructuring. However, Nigeria is not close to restructuring than it was ten years ago. The reasons, as far as I'm concerned, are the governors of the various states in Nigeria.

Nigerian governors are the laziest anywhere in the world. The governors are so lazy; they are only interested in collecting federal allocations monthly rather than look inward to generate revenue within their various states. Nigeria is so blessed with both human and natural resources, however, the country has not harnessed one-fifth of her potential, thanks to the governors and the political attitude of an average Nigerian who believed that there is only one level of governance, i.e central/federal government.

With the exception of Lagos State, the remaining 35 states in Nigeria cannot efficiently and effectively self-sustain without the monthly federal allocations. Interestingly, each of these states have enough resources to stand alone and be viable only if there is political will especially from the governors and the political actors in each state.

The governors are so lazy and are not ready to work or go extra mile in generating revenue and majority of them are comfortable collecting monthly cheques and then embezzling, misappropriating and looting the funds meant for the local government areas in their respective states. Most governors in Nigeria are as useless as the "P" in psychology. Because the governors are so comfortable with the status quo, they will and are fighting, tooth and nail, albeit covertly, to maintain the flawed structure currently in place.

Individually, I would suggest we put more pressure on our state governors if truly we want a restructured country.
